Jon's First Pinewood Derby

Yes, it's that time of year again. Time to check in with the Konchars to find out just how the Derby went. Well, I think our friend Ed said it best: "God often answers our prayers through those around us, and you guys are the answer to the prayers of many, many people here tonight".

As improbable as it would seem, Jon's car came in dead last in EVERY heat. For a total of 16 heats. Most times by several car lengths. Often it seemed the cars for the next heat were already being loaded at the top of the track before Jon's car crossed the finish line. Maybe the only thing more amazing than our yearly ability to consistently produce cars that exhibit the all the speed and aerodynamics of a sack of wet laundry was Jon's (thankfully) blissful unawareness of the situation. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK GOODNESS JON DIDN'T SEEM TO CLUE IN. Repeatedly throughout the evening, my friends and fellow parents of racers would ask me with a simpering whisper "How's Jon doing?". By all indications during the race and afterwards, Jon seemed to be having a blast. Again, I am grateful that Jon isn't one of my more aware children.

Of course winning is the only thing. Thanks to our Cubmaster Jana, the Heritage Park Pinewood Derby is also about the spirit of the races. And Jana did not disappoint! After spending only the last 2 months visiting every car dealership and Grease Monkey in the greater Highlands Ranch area, Jana was able to amass all sorts of cool racing decor. The Ferrari dealership gave her sweet red bags which she filled with all sorts of swag, like coupons for Chick-Fil-A food and free tokens at Chuck E. Cheeses, not to mention candy and racing toys.

The evening was a huge sucess, especially for all those parents who no longer had to worry about their boy coming in last place in every race. But really, it was a super fun night and does anyone have a Pinewood Derby car that didn't come in last that they would like to sell me for next year?

Jon and Papa working on the car last week. Too cute.

The boys got photo ID that allowed them to get close to the track.

The boys had to pass an eye test and driving exam before receiving their passes.

Our super-sweet hot dogs and veggies and chips dinner spread.

Check-in.

They traded in their regular neckerchiefs for these jaunty race ones.

Jon in the "pit" area. The spectators were seated right behind the red cones and Tommy was in the front row. After every race Jon's car was in, Tommy would shoot his fists into the air and shout "Yeah! Jon WON!!!". It was like the cutest thing ever. As much as Jon enjoyed the evening, I think Tommy loved it even more.

My race car treats. Because when you tell me I need to bring two dozen sweet treats to the Pinewood Derby, my mind instantly goes to mini Oreos, mini Nutter Butters and mini ice cream sandwiches.

Jon with his swag bag and his participant medal. No flimsy certificates proclaiming "BEST USE OF PAINT" or "MOST CREATIVE CAR NAME" for this pack.

Oh, and just in case you've been wondering what Little Brother has been up to lately......Josie gave him a makeover on Saturday. I'm not sure that pink is Tommy's color, but he definitely has the legs for that skirt.

that pit pass photo is a keeper. Thomas says he'll sell one of his winning cars for $10, but Wayne doesn't know about this, ok? :)
Your derby desserts are awesome. I'm sure they didn't last long.
And Tommy's a babe. What are big sisters for anyway? We've got an embarrassing photo of Thomas in a bib and bonnet thanks to his big sis & I don't think he would have sit still for the hair do. classic!

Um, HELLO?!!! That's unbelievable. No pressure. No "making kids feel EVEN worse because this is THE event of the season, dahling". None of that. That's like Pinewood Derby on crack. That is amazing.
